Our Sheep

Breeding Stock

Genetics are fascinating. Livestock breeding allows us to observe the wonderful language of DNA that speaks each unique animal into existence. Now add the environmental factors in which the animal is formed and the resulting epigenetic changes. A lifetime of learning.

Our goal in each of our sheep breeding programs is to select animals that have both the form and function to fit our environment. In our case, that means an animal that can turn grass into meat.

We aim to produce Texel rams that excel as terminal sires in commercial sheep flocks, whose offspring efficiently convert forage into high-yielding carcasses and high-quality meat.

Our Scottish Blackface sheep should exemplify the hardiness and thriftiness which has made them the most populous breed in the UK.

Our commercial dairy ewes should produce milk from grass without requiring supplementation to maintain their condition and should have the hardiness to handle life on the prairies.

Our maternal composite flocks should produce male and female seedstock that will improve the production characteristics of the flocks to which their genetics are added.

Grass-Fed Meat

The reason we have sheep on our farm is to convert grass into meat (and milk and wool)

while improving our soils.

As we develop the genetics of our sheep flocks, our central focus is the efficient production of delicious lamb using just forages, as it was intended to be. Meat produced in this way can be not only healthy, but healing to the human body.

We have lambs finished on pasture twice per year typically, in spring and in fall when the grass quality is the highest. We sell frozen lamb, but can discuss fresh sales as well.

We are not milking our dairy sheep at this time, but our dairy ewes have the genetics to produce a lot of milk from pasture.

Wool is sadly not valued as it should be, as a naturally regenerating fibre. Our naturally coloured wool is something we are also selecting for and will become a larger part of our business in the future.
